The Corey Village Site

The Corey Village site is located southwest of Aurora, NY. The site is on a distinctive, narrow peninsula that is currently an active farm. Previous archaeological excavations conducted by Jack Rossen (Ithaca College department of anthropology) identified this location as an archaeological site, but more information is needed to understand how Native peoples used the site. The significantly diverse types and amounts of medicinal plants along the slopes of the gullies that surround three sides of the site suggest that the site may be a healing village. The function of earthen embankments that separate the community area from the gorge cliffs are not understood and make this site distinct. The remote sensing surveys will test if magnetometer and ground-penetrating radar surveys can record the geophysical signatures of former longhouse structures, extramural features (activity areas outside of the houses), contribute to understanding the overall site layout by mapping the shape, size, orientation, and position of former longhouses and extramural features across the entire site, and help in understanding the function of the embankments?
