Physics Café Lecture Series at Ithaca College to Feature Talk on Black Holes Ithaca, NY--Jay M. Pasachoff, the Field Memorial Professor of Astronomy and director of the Hopkins Observatory at Williams College, will present "Black Holes: Small, Medium, and Huge" at Ithaca College on Tuesday, September 23. This latest talk in the Physics Café lecture series will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall. Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by the Department of Physics at Ithaca College and the American Astronomical Society. Classified by some scientists as among the most bizarre objects in the universe, black holes can warp time and have such a strong gravitational field not even light can escape them. Pasachoff will discuss the basics of these odd wonders and describe how black hole hunters have succeeded in bagging their invisible quarry. "The idea behind the Physics Café lecture series is to grab and hold the attention of science and nonscience majors by offering talks on exciting and accessible current topics in physics," says Beth Ellen Clark Joseph, assistant professor of physics at Ithaca College. "The talks are presented in a café environment, where coffee is served and students, physicists, staff, faculty, and interested members of the Ithaca community can informally discuss new ideas." Each talk in the Physics Café series is presented by a world-class expert, Clark Joseph adds. "These speakers are known for their abilities to communicate with non-scientific audiences. They've won awards for their efforts to engage the public in our search for a physical understanding of the universe."
